The Russian Orthodox Church made a lastminute decision to stay away from the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church, which took place on Crete, Greece, in July 2016 in a bid to avert a split, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill told journalists ahead of his 70th birthday.
